Black locust makes the best raised beds. The wood is incredibly durable and resistant to decay and insects. Not only will you not have to replace these beds every few years, locust trees grow quickly, making the harvest of this wood more sustainable.
You can now find black locust raised beds, milled and pre-cut in
Newfield, here at GreenTree!
The raised bed walls come in 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-foot sections. Mix and match to make square or rectangular beds. The sections just slide together. No tools required. Each section is 6 inches high.
Price per section:
1 foot: $3.50
2 feet: $7.00
4 feet: $14.00
6 feet: $21.00

Whenever we need to build something around here, our first thought is usually "recycled pallets!" (For ref: see some of our store shelves)
And we're not the first to think "pallets!" when it comes to gardening. Pallet gardens are really trendy and useful. They're rustic, compact, hangable, leanable, and moveable. You can use them for herbs, flowers, leafy greens, succulents.... anything that'll fit.
From 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at GreenTree Garden Supply you can find out how pallet gardening works and leave with the materials you’ll need to make your own at home. We'll show you how, with just a few supplies, you can create an attractive garden that requires very little space and maintenance. With the right soil and irrigation your pallet garden can provide you with fresh greens, herbs or flowers for the entire growing season. You'll leave with the know-how, supplies and inspiration to add a little more green to your life.
Take home the pallet garden kit for $10, which includes the pallet and covering. Soil may be purchased separately. Pallets are approximately 4'x3'. Make sure you can transport your supplies home! If you'd like to make something smaller, get in touch. We can cut them down to smaller sizes. Let us know you’re coming so we have enough supplies. Please e-mail info@greentreegardensupply.com to register for this workshop.
When we started selling our own soil soils this spring, we had no idea hops would be such a hot area! But with the Farm Brewery law passing in New York state to encourage New York breweries to use hops grown in New York, more and more small farmers are getting into hops growing.
In the late 1800s hops were a huge industry in New York, but a changing production process for beer making and plant disease all but wiped out hop farming in the state until recently.
When growers started coming to us for advice on how to grow their hops, we got to researching. We've developed recommendations for hops farmers to prepare their fields and a great soil to start hops rhizomes in containers.
One of our customers brought this beauty in to show us how well it's doing this week. He's reviving a hops farm out near Cooperstown, complete with its own 1882 hops house for drying.

Our hops soil is tailored for hops, with a pH in the 6.5-7.0 range, plus a blend of ingredients for the right balance of nutrients, waterholding, and drainage. And GreenTree Coco. Hops love Coco, too.
We've been making this soil to order, so please let us know if you want some. We can do any size batch -- from a few cubic feet to multiple cubic yards.
We arrived at this hops soil because someone asked us for a custom blend. Have a different type of plant you want to plant in specially tailored soil? Just ask. We'd love to whip some up.

We just love our interesting customers' interesting projects.
Here's a fodder and aquaponics system that one customer was kind enough to share with us:

He's growing fodder for his chickens in a hydroponic system. When the plants get to this point, the roots mat together and he can throw the whole thing to his chickens, who dig right in. He said that eating this made his chicken's egg yolks a beautiful color all winter long.
A 200-gallon fish tank (long tank on left) drains to a 44-gallon bio filter (barrel lower left corner), which is pumped onto the growbed under lights. Gravity takes the water back to the fish tank. There's cucumbers, basil, and lettuce in there. (Next time he's here, we'll sell him GreenTree Coco, not Botanicare!)
