For more than 30 years GreenTree has promoted environmentally friendly ways of growing plants to protect and preserve Earth’s natural resources.

GreenTree’s original owners Jay and Terry Waring led the development of the hydroponic industry on the East Coast and were renowned for their technical knowledge, customer support, and product range.

In 2012, Jay and Terry decided it was time to retire, and they sold GreenTree to one of their loyal customers.

John Gaunt, GreenTree’s new owner, shares Jay and Terry’s vision to grow the GreenTree business. John is a soil scientist and entrepreneur who calls Ithaca home. He helps commercial growers and businesses worldwide to improve their soils and to respond to the opportunities of a low-carbon future. A biochar guru, John has developed biochar products for commercial horticulture and home gardening.

John asked Reid Waring, Jay’s son, to stay on at the store as manager. Reid knows his products, knows his customers, and keeps up on the latest indoor gardening trends. Holly McIntyre joined the GreenTree team to take care of marketing and outreach and building the GreenTree story.

Most excitingly, GreenTree has moved!  Now at 606 Elmira Road, just 1.6 miles southwest down Elmira Road from the old location, GreenTree has more space for more products, better visibility from the road, and a discreet loading area.

We'd love to show you our new space and share our knowledge. We're here from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. You'll often find John out back, developing product lines, testing products offered by our suppliers and sourcing innovative materials that both do no harm to the environment and produce higher yields and brighter blooms. John, Reid, and Holly are all members of the Ithaca community. We take our commitment to our community, our environment, and our world seriously. We’re proud to be part of revitalizing the south end of Elmira Road just outside of Ithaca in our new location at 606 Elmira Road, formerly Ithaca Beer Co.
