At GreenTree, we think everyone should get a garden for Christmas and we have lots of gift ideas for gardeners of all skill levels.
1. Grow lights
Grow lights keep the plants that you brought in over the winter happy. Plants need the correct light spectrum, light intensity, and length of day to remain happy and healthy during these long winter months. If the limited amount of light coming through your windows just isn’t cutting it, your plants need supplemental lighting. Smaller all-in-one grow light kits (such as SunBlaze fluorescents and the Mini Sunburst 175 watt metal halide) make great gifts because they are inexpensive (starting at $25.50), they don’t use much energy, and they are perfect for small spaces, such as apartments and kitchens.
Get it with a 2-foot Jumpstart light stand or hang the lights from your ceiling or the bottom of a shelf.
2. Sure Shot Measuring Glass
These little measuring shot glasses are perfect for measuring nutrients or for a little holiday cheer and make great stocking stuffers.
3. Hydroponics Basics Book
This slim volume will fit into most stockings and the price ($5.99) makes it a great gift for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of hydroponics.
Indoor grow huts are also a great idea for people who want to give their plants the love they deserve, but don’t want bright grow lamps lighting up their whole house. Grow huts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and when they are closed up; their reflective interior maximizes the light around your plants and keeps the glare off your TV or computer screen.
3. Coal Biochar - GreenTree WormCharge and BioCore
Your favorite gardener just might want some biochar in their stocking, even if they’re not on the naughty list. Biochar looks like coal, but it’s much more exciting. Use our GreenTree BioCoreTM biochar as an amendment to improve your soil quality and give the microbes in your soil the perfect habitat. A healthy microbiome makes for healthy plants. We also offer GreenTree WormChargeTM, which is biochar that we place in vermicompost beds and let the worms "do the work" to create a biologically activated biochar product that's ready to supercharge your soil. A little can go a long way and we have sizes from .25 cu ft bags on up.
6. Heating mats
Your seedlings – and even your houseplants – need a boost of heat to grow well. We sell 1-, 2-, and 4-tray heating mats for plug trays, but we also have these awesome 3”x20” heating mats designed to sit on your windowsill.
Who doesn’t want designer poop under the tree? Peruvian seabird guano or Jamaican, Indonesian or Mexican bat guano, your gardener’s plants will think it’s delicious. (And yes, it does make a difference where the birds and bats are from – their different diets make for different poop.)
8. Bluelab pH Meters
We carry a wide variety of pH meters by Bluelab. We are also Bluelab certified so we can help you choose a meter and we can help you calibrate it and facilitate any future questions your giftee might have.
9. Carnivorous Plant Ornaments
These exotic plants don't require any special gardening knowledge or skill aside from the directions that come with each one. Napenthes are tropical carnivorous pitcher plants from Southeast Asia. In the wild, these plants eat everything from small insects to small mammals but in your home, they will take care of fruit flies, house flies, ants or any other types of insects the plants are large enough to accommodate. The plants will only attract insects that are already in your home- you don't have to worry about any unwanted visitors coming in because of the plants. They require 2-3 hours of DIRECT light and require no fertilizer or feeding, but you will need to use distilled water (easily obtained inexpensively at the grocery store) or rainwater to water them. Do not use tap water. You can mist them with the distilled water to keep their environment humid. We have three sizes with prices that range from $10-$15 and make great gifts for aspiring young gardeners.
10. Drying racks
For the herbalist, these drying racks are perfect for drying chilli peppers, lavender and other medicinal plants for use in everything from cooking to soap-making.
