At GreenTree, we’re committed to supporting sustainable gardening and our local community, so we’ve teamed up with Cayuga Compost, a Tompkins County business that makes compost from local waste, diverting organic waste from existing landfills and creating a product that can go back into local soils.
GreenTree is now selling 5-gallon buckets of Cayuga Compost for $7.99, including a $3 refundable bucket deposit. We’re really excited to partner with Cayuga Compost, a great local company, and we look forward giving more people access to their great products.
Cayuga Compost is a wonderful addition to potting soils and garden beds. Plus, it’s all local. The food waste you put in compost bins around Ithaca comes back to you as a nutrient-rich product to nourish your plants!
It’s made from composted food and food packaging waste, and farm, yard and wood waste. It ages at temperatures over 130 degrees F, which kills weed seeds and pathogens. Mixed with your garden soil, it improves soil structure and moisture retention and increases bioactivity in the root zone.
Some ideas for how to use Cayuga Compost:
For potting mix, mix equal parts of your regular potting soil and compost
For new garden beds, mix 75% compost with 25% native soil
For existing garden beds, top dress with 2 inches of compost for each 4 inches of bed depth
