We believe that soil matters and is at the heart of life. We also believe that Biochar will be part of the solution to climate change. Greentree Soils and Biochar are good for plants AND good for the earth.
Our Process
It takes physics, chemistry, and biology to make a great soil. Our proprietary and patented processes take care of it all, harnessing biology to optimize plant growth.
GreenTree Coco
We use coconut coir instead of peat because of its superior water-holding and wettability. Coir is a sustainable resource while peat is extracted from peatlands, destroying an important carbon store and natural habitat.
The coco we use is OMRI and RHP registered. It has been hydrated with reverse osmosis water and buffered to remove salts, ensuring a premium quality product, whether used alone or as part of a soil blend.
GreenTree soils are:
Made by hand in Ithaca, N.Y.
Created in small batches.
Biologically activated - our aerated composting system encourages beneficial bacteria to flourish.
Backed by science.
We have the know-how and flexibility to make custom blended soil mixes and horticultural media. Whether for 1 cubic yard or a trailer load, we'll work from your recipe or help you design a mix to suit your unique needs. Choose one of our existing blends below or contact us for details and pricing on custom blends, larger orders or to carry our soils in your retail store and ask about our custom labeling program.
A premium hydrated coconut coir buffered using GreenTree’s proprietary technology. Our in-house hydration and buffering ensure the very best final quality. This coco can be used straight from the bag.
A Coco-rich soil with peat, perlite, and a starter nutrient charge. This is the soil for people who use high-porosity peat products. Less peat is better for the environment, and Coco ups the waterholding without waterlogging.
A blend of coir, sphagnum peat and specially selected organic media, GreenTree Growers’ Blend is full of nutrients and biology. A premium soil with high air capacity and drainage for indoor and outdoor gardening.
Full of nutrients and biology, GreenTree Ithaca Blend is a premium soil with excellent water retention and drainage for indoor and outdoor gardening. We combine GreenTree CocoTM, sphagnum peat, premium worm castings and specially selected organic nutrients with the addition of our own patented BiocoreTM biochar.
An organic supersoil for container gardening made using our proprietary aging process. This soil contains all the nutrients typically necessary for a full crop cycle.
A peat-light blend with coco, earthworm castings, and organic nutrients like bone char, sulfate of potash, vegetable protein such as peanut meal, and animal protein such as feather meal.
Same as the GreenTree Hydro with rice hulls to add air capacity instead of perlite. It's called No-Float because the rice hulls won't float to the top of your soil with watering like perlite will.
Biocore increases soil carbon, encourages beneficial microbiology, conserves water and aids nutrient supply. After blending, each batch goes through our special "aging" process to encourage beneficial microbiology, producing a high quality soil that is all organic.
Carbon Consulting LLC is committed to sustainable development and is at the forefront of developing innovative strategies to address the challenges of climate change.
Carbon Consulting LLC supports activities that will deliver a billion tons of CO2 offset. We are doing this both through our high quality research and consulting activities as well as through investing strategically in opportunities that enable the emerging biochar industry to commoditize the carbon assets it creates and to aggregate and trade these on the carbon markets.
What is Biochar?
Created through a process called pyrolysis, biochar locks in and stabilizes carbon that decomposing plant biomass would otherwise release back into the atmosphere as CO2.
In pyrolysis, biomass is heated in an oxygen-deprived environment, causing a thermal decomposition of the plant matter. Beyond the benefits of capturing carbon, pyrolysis itself can be used to deliver energy products like heat and electricity while producing biochar.
This stabilized form of carbon can be returned to the earth, where it continues to store carbon while improving soil productivity. Biochar can be used in a range of situations, from potting soil to turf grass applications. By using biochar in their fields, farmers can increase agricultural production without increasing cropland.

GreenTree Ultimate BlendTM is an organic supersoil for container gardening made using our proprietary aging process. It contains a blend of GreenTree CocoTM, sphagnum peat and specially selected organic nutrients, worm castings, bat guano, humic acids, and GreenTree BiocoreTM, a biochar* that encourages microbiology, improves water retention, and locks in carbon. This soil contains all the nutrients typically needed for a full crop cycle.
A peat-light blend with coco, earthworm castings, and organic nutrients like bone char, sulfate of potash, vegetable protein such as peanut meal, and animal protein such as feather meal. Meets NOFA Standards.
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich soil amendment created from the thermal decomposition of biomass heated in a low-oxygen environment. This stabilized form of carbon can be returned to the earth, where it continues to store carbon while improving soil productivity. Biochar can be used in a range of situations, from potting soil to turfgrass applications. By using biochar in their fields, farmers can increase agricultural production without increasing cropland.
You can use biochar in your garden, potting soil and compost production as well.
What makes your biochar different?
Not all biochar is created equally. GreenTree BioCoreTM is made from wood left over from the logging industry. Left to decompose naturally, this biomass would release CO2 back into the atmosphere. By creating biochar, we lock the carbon into a form we can return to the soil. Beyond the benefit of capturing carbon, the process of making biochar – called pyrolysis –can be used to create energy products like heat and electricity.
GreenTree BiocharTM products use biochar to create healthy biology and nutrient-rich soils. GreenChargeTM uses a patented process* to BiochargeTM biochar. Our biochar has been produced under carefully specified and controlled conditions, and it aids water retention and provides an ideal environment for microbial activity. BioChargeTM delivers nutrients, trace elements and microbes that will enhance plant growth. We have formulated GreenChargeTM products specifically for use as a conditioner to mix with your soil that will deliver nutrients in container-grown situations that allow for water-only schedules.
How do I use biochar at home?
We offer a number of biochar products at our store in Ithaca, N.Y., for use in your home garden.
Pure biochar, intended to be used as a soil amendment in your garden, as an ingredient for potting soil, green roofs, soil remediation and low-impact rainwater devices.
Same as the GreenTree Hydro with rice hulls to add air capacity instead of perlite. It's called No-Float because the rice hulls won't float to the top of your soil with watering like perlite will.
GreenTree CompostChargeTM is an organic blend of GreenTree BioCoreTM biochar and GreenTree CocoTM, specially designed to enhance your compost production.
Made from sustainable forest products, our patented* GreenTree BioCoreTM is a pure, high-surface-area biochar produced at high temperatures. It provides a unique environment for microbial colonization and promotes reactions with organic matter and mineral nutrients released during the composting process.
Directions:
Add to your compost with other brown materials. Aim for equal parts browns and greens.
